Finding and figuring out how to boost self-confidence in life is not an easy task. As I’ve continued to go through struggles in life, I’ve found patterns that seem to build my confidence the best. Here, are the ultimate takeaways I got:

What is Self- Confidence?

Self-confidence is how well you trust and care for yourself. It is knowing that you deserve to be happy and live for yourself rather than pretending to be someone else. Not to be confused with over-confidence and perfectionism

Self confidence is not perfection. It is knowing you have flaws and still loving yourself despite them.

This is NOT Self-Confidence
  • Putting others down so that you feel better
  • Feeling insecure in all your choices
  • Being rude to others
  • Not staying open-minded
  • Seeking constant validation
  • Feeling as if something is never ‘enough’
  • Putting yourself at the center and not acknowledging others
  • Always proving that you are right
This IS Self-Confidence
  • Putting yourself first and still the validity of others
  • Practicing self-love
  • Stepping out of your comfort zone
  • Honesty
  • Being open-minded
  • Recognizing that you are not perfect
  • Trying to stay positive
  • Staying true to yourself and your morals even when others don’t

What Can Cause a Lack of Self-Confidence?

So many things can decrease your self-esteem. This can include mental health issues, relationship issues, stress, unexpected changes in life, and so much more.

How to Boost Your Self-Confidence

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

If you haven’t heard @autumrainn on Instagram, you’re missing out. Years ago, she posted something talking about how she dances in the car while waiting at a stoplight. She said people around her may think she’s crazy, but she does it anyway. She’s found that stepping out of her comfort zone makes her feel more like herself. After talking about this with her, I decided to try it out myself. Whenever I was dealing with self-doubt, I would remind myself that I was making it a goal to step out of my comfort zone.

I cannot tell you how helpful this was. Doing things that you wouldn’t normally do in public and being yourself is such a major boost in self-confidence. I found that when I was in a period of self-doubt, I would hide around others for the fear of looking stupid. When I decided to stop hiding, I counteracted these thoughts in my mind by going for it either way.

Treat Yourself Well

Enough with the negative self-talk. Being rude to yourself can hurt you more than you think. Start trying to be more optimistic. Easier said than done, I know, but start small! Smile when you look in the mirror. Have you ever noticed that when a stranger smiles at you, it brings up your energy a bit? The same goes with smiling at yourself, it almost ‘tricks’ your mind into feeling better.

Start noticing when you’ve got a negative mindset. Ask yourself how you can find a positive in the situation. Sometimes this can be really hard, but it gets better with practice, I promise.

Find a few habits that help you practice self-love. If you’re not sure where to start, read my post on learning to love yourself.

Fake it ’till You Make it

Last but not least, the advice of one of the most authentic human beings on Instagram- @carolineclendening. She is so honest about her journey in building confidence and she’s said that sometimes you just have to pretend to be confident until you believe it. Confidence isn’t how other people perceive you, it’s how you see yourself. Thus, a simple mindset shift can completely shift your world. She explains it better than I do- take a look at her post:

A lot of times when we need to boost self-confidence in ourselves we can change small things in our daily lives to build that confidence. Self-confidence stems from self-love, so we need to build habits toward that. Sending hugs your way! You’ve got this!
